China Arrival Setup: Payments, Maps and Essential Apps Before Leaving the Airport

Set up mobile data, two payment options, offline hotel details, maps and translation before boarding so your first journey in China does not depend on one app or connection.

Quick answer

Before flying to China, prepare four essentials: working mobile data, at least two ways to pay, offline hotel and transport details, and a translation and map setup that you have tested at home. Install and update the relevant apps, complete account verification where possible, link a primary and backup payment method, and save your hotel address in both English and Chinese characters.

After landing, connect your chosen roaming, eSIM or local SIM service, complete immigration and baggage collection, confirm the hotel destination, and use an official airport transport option. Do not rely on a single foreign card, app, network or live translation tool. Payment support, identity checks, airport procedures and app features can change, so verify current requirements shortly before departure.

1. Before departure: build a landing-day setup

Check your phone and connection

Confirm that your phone is unlocked and compatible with the roaming plan, eSIM or local SIM option you intend to use. Check whether your plan includes China and whether international SMS is available. Some accounts and payment services may require a verification message, and airport Wi-Fi should not be your only plan for receiving one.

Charge the phone fully and pack the correct charging cable and a power bank if you use one. Turn on automatic time and date settings, check that your phone has enough storage, and update the operating system and essential apps while you still have a reliable connection.

Prepare payment before you fly

International visitors may be able to use Alipay or WeChat Pay with an eligible foreign card, but support can vary by country, card issuer, account, verification status and current app rules. Create and verify accounts before departure where the service allows it. Do not wait until you are standing at an airport transport counter to discover that registration, identity checks or card linking is incomplete.

Add a primary card and, if possible, a second card or payment route. Test the account setup and review any prompts about billing details, identity documents or security checks. Keep a physical backup card and some alternative funds available where practical. There is no universal guarantee that a particular foreign card, payment app or cash arrangement will work in every situation.

Save the hotel information offline

Save the following details outside your booking app:

  • Hotel name in English and Chinese characters
  • Full address in English and Chinese characters
  • Hotel phone number, including the international country code
  • Booking reference and check-in date
  • Destination airport, terminal and any transfer instructions
  • The name and address of a local contact or onward destination, if relevant

Take screenshots and keep a written or printed copy. Chinese characters are particularly useful when showing the destination to a taxi driver, airport information desk or transport counter. Ask the accommodation for its Chinese name and address if these are not shown clearly on the booking confirmation.

Download and test essential tools

Install the payment, map, translation, airline, booking and connectivity apps you are likely to need. Download language packs, saved places or offline material when the relevant app supports them. Search for the hotel, airport terminals, railway stations and likely transport pickup points before leaving home.

Do not assume that a map pin saved in one app will appear in another. Save the written address as well as the location. Open each important app after installation and check that it is logged in, has the necessary permissions and can display the information you need.

2. The essential app kit

Payments

Prepare Alipay and/or WeChat Pay if they are suitable for your trip and available to your account. Complete phone verification and card linking in advance where supported. Keep the card issuer’s contact details and know how to freeze or replace a card if your phone or wallet is lost.

A backup payment method matters more than choosing one supposedly perfect app. It could be a second prepared card, another supported payment service, cash or assistance from a staffed transport counter. Check current foreign-card support, fees, verification requirements and any restrictions with the relevant service and your card issuer before travelling.

Maps

Use a map service that works for your phone and destination, but treat live navigation as one part of the plan. Save the hotel name, Chinese address, airport terminal and transport pickup area. If the app supports offline maps or saved directions, prepare them before landing and test them with the phone in offline mode.

Airport layouts and pickup points can vary. Follow official signs and confirm the exact terminal, exit or meeting area before leaving the building.

Translation

Prepare a translation app with an offline language option if available. Also save short written phrases such as “Please take me to this hotel” and “Where is the official taxi queue?” Written Chinese and a complete hotel address are often more useful than relying only on live voice translation.

Connectivity and travel tools

Keep your airline, accommodation and booking confirmations accessible without logging in again. Your eSIM or roaming provider may have its own activation instructions. Read those instructions before departure and note how to contact the provider if activation fails.

A simple pre-flight check is:

  • App installed and updated
  • Account verified where required
  • Primary and backup payment methods prepared
  • Hotel searched and saved
  • Chinese address captured offline
  • Translation resources downloaded
  • Roaming, eSIM or SIM instructions available
  • Permissions enabled
  • Phone and backup battery charged

3. First two hours at the airport

Follow this order after landing:

  1. Connect carefully. Keep the phone in airplane mode until you are ready to activate roaming, eSIM or another connection. Once connected, test actual data by opening a prepared page or app rather than assuming activation succeeded.
  2. Complete arrival formalities. Finish immigration and collect your baggage before trying to solve every transport question. Keep your passport, arrival documents and booking details together.
  3. Confirm your destination. Open the saved hotel information and check the hotel name, Chinese address, airport, terminal and pickup instructions.
  4. Choose documented transport. Use an official airport train, bus, taxi queue, clearly identified ride-hailing pickup or prearranged transfer appropriate to your destination. If you are unsure, ask a staffed information desk or transport counter.
  5. Confirm before departing. Check the destination and payment method before entering a vehicle or boarding transport. Keep enough battery and time for a change of plan.
  6. Send an update. If connectivity works, tell the hotel or a trusted contact that you have landed and which transport option you are taking.

Avoid accepting unsolicited transport offers in the arrivals hall. Follow airport signs and use clearly marked services rather than relying on a stranger’s claim that a normal queue is closed.

4. If the planned route fails

If you have no data, you can still reach the hotel by showing the saved Chinese address to staff, a taxi driver or a transport counter. Keep the original booking confirmation available, even if you change from a planned transfer to a taxi, train or bus.

5. Troubleshooting before and after landing

SMS verification does not arrive: Check the country code, international SMS access and whether your phone has a signal. Try completing verification before departure if possible. Do not assume that one workaround will work for every account; contact the relevant service or issuer if the problem continues.

A foreign card is unsupported or declined: Check whether the issuer blocked the transaction, try the backup card or another prepared payment route, and retain a non-app option. Avoid repeatedly submitting a failed transaction without understanding the prompt.

The connection does not work: Review the eSIM or roaming activation steps, restart the phone if appropriate, and use saved offline information. Airport Wi-Fi may help with some tasks but may not support every login, verification or service.

An app is unavailable or you cannot log in: Use screenshots, printed records, hotel contact details and written addresses. Essential information should never exist only inside one app.

The phone or wallet is lost: Keep secure copies of passport and booking information, know how to contact your bank, and separate backup payment methods so that losing one item does not remove every option.

6. Final pre-flight checklist

Before leaving for the airport, confirm:

  • Your phone is unlocked and charged.
  • Your roaming, eSIM or SIM plan is compatible with the trip.
  • International SMS access is available if your accounts need it.
  • Payment accounts are created, verified and linked where supported.
  • A backup card or alternative funds are ready.
  • Hotel details are saved in English and Chinese characters.
  • Maps, translation resources and booking confirmations work offline where possible.
  • Airport transport instructions and important contacts are available outside the apps.
  • Current payment onboarding rules, foreign-card support, connectivity availability and airport procedures have been rechecked.

The key step is to do this setup at home, not in the arrivals hall. A prepared phone and a written Chinese hotel address will usually give you more flexibility than any single app. Verify current details close to departure, then keep your first transport decision simple, official and easy to change.

FAQs

Can I set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arriving in China?

In many cases, international visitors can begin account setup and card linking before arrival, where the current service rules support it. Complete verification early and check whether your card and account are eligible. Keep a backup because acceptance and onboarding can vary.

What if my foreign card is declined by a payment app?

Check the card issuer’s security message, try your prepared backup method and contact the issuer if necessary. Do not rely on one card or assume that a declined app transaction means every payment option will fail.

Can I reach my hotel without mobile data?

Yes, if you have saved the hotel name, full address and phone number in Chinese characters. Show these details to an official airport information desk, transport counter or taxi driver, and use airport signs to find a documented transport option.

Is airport Wi-Fi enough to activate payment or connectivity services?

It may help, but it is not guaranteed to support every login, SMS verification, app feature or provider activation. Prepare accounts, downloads and activation instructions before departure, and keep offline copies of the information you need.
